who said that time is gonna stop us?

fast track updates

  • 1.5 million euro were spent for security measures during the military parade for the national day on the 25th. There are no money for hospitals, schools e.t.c but for the security of politicians the cash flow never ends. Nice one guys...
  • In the U.S.A, Alan Northrop spent 17 years in prison. After all these years it was proved that he was innocent. He got 20.000 $ for the ''mistake'' and he said...''i will just start over again''. He taught us a lesson on how easy we dramatise our life
  • The elections will probably take place on the 6th of May. While things are getting harder for everyone  the two (once) great parties have started a fight show over the decisions they both made. If you want to bet your money on the winner our suggestion is Angie
  • The Prodigy will come again for a show on the 2nd of July (Rockwave festival) along with Iggy and the Stooges, Everlast and Peter Hook. The ticket is 28 euro...remember that you can't get a loan from banks... lol
  • If you want to share something on this blog or if you think that we deserve some threats feel free to contact us at funkyathens@yahoo.com. Don't be shy...we won't bite

Leopards and other urban animals

Ever since I moved to Athens it stroke me. At first I thought it was just one rare specimen that got lost on the streets. I studied it carefully and tried to take a picture of it, but ironically it was faster than me and vanished in a cloud of perfume.

But then I started to notice there were more. In fact, they were spread all over the city. Day or night, while dining out or while taking a walk, while shopping in a fancy store or at the grocery market, bang!, they would show up all of the sudden, solitary creatures or sometimes in packs of two or three, making me take out the camera in a hurry and whisper: 'Look, the leopards..".

Just like you can never find two zebras wearing the same stripes, these creatures were distinctive and unique from each other, but the things they had in common would define this species as follows: minimum age - 60, bright make up applied at the same time on eye lids, lips and cheeks (such a no-no for other species), high heels, intense perfume, never caught on a bad hair day and always wearing at least one piece of animal print.

Normally that would be leopard, but I have also seen tiger or zebra or a mix of leopard, tiger and zebra. And I do not mean a scarf or something subtle. I am talking about leopard high heeled boots up to the knee, tiger coat with fur collar, leopard stretched dress matched with leopard hair scarf, oversized leopard bag and... every now and then, on my lucky days, the ultimate thing, the big fish, the holy glory....the leopard head to toe outfit.

I would declare them protected species and do something to encourage them to appear in public much more often, as I find them very refreshing as opposed to all black or all brown or all grey or black and brown and grey outfits worn by women of same age in my home country.

Most agely challenged (to be politically correct) women in Athens seem to pay extra attention to their looks and they make me think they have just visited the hairdresser, the make up artist and the Gucci store, but these leopards... It is my strong belief that the leopards still enjoy a healthy sex life, otherwise I don't think that they would dress like that. You might say that the whole purpose of their fashion statement would be to attract males and catch some fresh prey, but I think they have already captured something.

In either case, good for them, there is still hope after 70, after all it seems that here in Athens 70 is the new 40. Rrrrrroarrrrrr!

p.s. Photos not taken by us, it seems our reflexes are not great and the leopards are well known for their speed.

fast track updates

  • Every political party is talking about elections but nobody knows exactly when that will take place.Until they do, relax by the governor voted by Angie and the apprentice...who cares about what people have to say
  • Carlos Latuff will be drawing at the Dimotiki Agora Kipselis on Friday 23/3. A very nice artist that really shows some reality through his images. He is going to be there at 20.00, not to be missed
  • The ships are still not sailing due to the strike. Should we think that the goods and the people will reach the islands...swimming? On the other hand it's ok, we do have an all star government so we are sure that they are going to find a great, fantastic and proper...dead end as usual. No mercy...
  • Winter is finally backing off. However, it takes salaries along. In June everything will be shrunk again in terms of....everything. So, if you can start saving money for your summer holiday it would be good. If not, Greece has sea all around, no worries
  • The travel agents from England have said that tourists will not be as many as in the previous years due to the image Greece has. You will pay significantly less than you ever had...isn't that image good enough for you gents?
  • Send your feedback or comments or whatever you need to say. It will be much appreciated and you will get a candy
be safe...

My favourite stranger (Athenian Stories)

Jim was a man that didn't know how to use simple words or talk about random things. He knew how to read through people though and that was something he was doing well.He was always saying that he had the greatest talent but it was too much for him to bear. ''Human vanity can turn into a force so strong that could make a star fall'' he said and the brightest stars of his life faded through what came and was much more bigger than his confidence.
He was dressed in a suit that used to be in vogue 4-5 years ago, it was rather a reflection of him, of what he used to be and of what he couldn't be anymore. His hands were clean, without scars, you could tell that his job couldn't have been something that involved manual work. His manners and expressions came out almost mechanically, as a robot scheduled to do everything regally but somehow on the way its program got crushed. He was holding a newspaper dated 3/4/2009.Although at that time it was 2011, he was always reading it along with a coffee that he was taking for free from a certain cafe. I always paid for mine. He was laughing about that but it didn't bother me. Even his laughter came out with coughs and bitterness. That time he said to me that even his grandchildren could drink from that cafe anything for free due to the overall tips he had left along with the usual money for the past years until 2009.
He wasn't saying too much. Most of the times he was talking to himself. But not in the psycho way you imagine. In the way we all talk to ourselves sometimes, it's just that he was doing it more frequently. I didn't mind because i was learning, i was observing and reaching conclusions and insights from the best, that believed that his dream sandcastle was never going to be drifted away by bigger waves and its ruins penetrated by greater sharks.
I used to find him on a bench every two weeks, only on Sundays, until he missed our usual, unconditional and unscheduled appointment. Then he missed the next one and afterwards the next after that. The cafe supervisor said to me that Mr.Jim was found in front of a once classy restaurant that had been closed for 2 years. The only thing that he wrote on a half burned piece of paper was '' the accounts have been covered''.

TAF-a place like home

The night was young. We couldn't stay at home anymore, the walls felt like were coming closer and closer as two sumo warriors dressed in astronauts ready to fight over a kilo of rice. The door was locked approximately 15minutes after this vision from a Quentin Tarantino movie came into our minds. No rain could stop us, not even Chuck Norris in his early days. We wanted art, people, music, a proper coffee and to be near the city center in order to carry on with our great evasion afterwards. If you combine those 4 elements in a cocktail mix that you drink right before going out, the idea that will automatically come in your mind is TAF (The Art Foundation). The place where we feel like home...but not the type we were in at that moment.
According to TAF, the aim is to present international contemporary art by Greek and International artists and to collaborate with curators and institutions as to organise exhibitions defined by experimentation. The art exposed will make you think of a wider meaning to what surrounds you and you will be surprised by the variety of thoughts involved in the process.

The building is from 1870 and has been renovated in order to cover the needs of the place. The gallery is on the first floor and the basement where there are several rooms to go and see the artifacts. The yard is nice with a huge tree that really adds something to the whole thing and during summer the tent of winter is removed offering an outdoor experience. Prices are normal as in any other cafe or bar (beer for 5 euro) and having in mind that the gallery is free to see that is a rather symbolic amount for what this place offers. The only negative thing that we frequently encounter is that TAF is always packed. You will have to go there earlier than usual because at about 19.00 you will find people waiting to find a seat.
As it seems a glimpse to another kind of era is more than desired...

Happy women's day, women!

"If women didn't exist, all the money in the world would have no meaning."
